One must develop a routine that involves constant monitoring.  Watering (and then re-watering in most cases) of crops must take place frequently and prior to planting, a gardener needs to gauge approximately how much space each plant will need. Once planted under these ideal conditions, however, seedlings have the space and freedom to flourish, which depending on the plant, may be extremely easy or difficult; after only a few short weeks, once the trenches and rows have been developed, the fruits of labor start to emerge.  I’m often amazed at what we accomplish in only one growing season.

As part of the learning outcomes in OLTD 501, we were told to choose a metaphor that represents our journey throughout the OLTD program.  Seeing how I help run a teaching garden at my school, I couldn’t help but think how perfect this analogy was; as with working with any living system, in order for growth to take place, there must be an adequate supply of resources and living space.

To grow in a garden, plants need a great deal of care and freedom.  The same can be said for learning a new skill like teaching online.  When I first started out in this course, I had a limited amount of information in this area; I’d taught a few DL courses years ago, but back then, I didn’t have the technological background to make them my own.  However, as my journey in this course progressed, I was given the right resources, space, and freedom from my instructor to expand and grow as an online teacher.
